A practice across lifetimes…

I used to sneeze and touch my toes to my head.

Before that, the thought of touching my toes boggled my brain…

I was never naturally flexible nor strong – I fought to become every bit of that. Years of unaddressed trauma stuffed down deep, I practiced daily and combed through the tangles piece by piece.

I learned movement is my love language. That when I’m barefoot, breathing and embracing a sense of play I’m most myself and as I dealt with my life stuff, energy opened and I found me.

I traveled the world and taught & practiced with some of my most influential teachers. They taught me the first 10 years of our practice we are a beginner. Boy were they right…

Simultaneously, life started to happen again. My mantra was, “If I do more, I can fix this”. This attitude will take you far and also has the capacity to shatter.

This time, things were harder to put back together. And if I’m being honest with myself, I’m very much still in that process. It’s not just me anymore. I now have a trusty side kick and I always put him first.
Stress & adrenaline have fueled me for a hot minute. Studio practices with a teacher who moves me are a rare delicacy. Home practices regularly turn into yin accompanied with a glass of wine & my naturally tight hips & hamstrings win on a daily basis…

The tension I hold in my heart is so palatable just thinking about backbends makes me want to throw up… My body knows where it wants to go but informs me there is a lot of crud I need to address.

Yoga has NOTHING to do with touching your toes and everything to do with what you learn in the process.
How you do one thing, is how you do everything…

Today my practice is patient. It’s gentle. It’s kind. Every second I get on my mat is a gift and I remember more than ever life happens in the spaces in between.

I’m remembering how to smile. I’m remembering there is a thing called joy. I’m remembering life is easier when I’m breathing and sometimes the bravest and most important thing I can do is just show up.

I’m reminded life is not linear. Do the work. Trust the practice. Listen and receive the lessons.

The opportunity to do it barefoot is a well welcomed bonus…

With love,
C
